One More Pointless App In The Android Market
I present to you the game-changing app that is "Signature Saver":
With this app you can create a PNG image file of your signature and share it via email or any of the other sharing services on your phone, such as Dropbox, Evernote etc.
What's the point of it? Good question. I don't know really. I personally have never had cause to digitise my signature, but I can imagine others needing to. For sticking at the bottom of a Word mail-out or something.
You can download the app from here if you like.
So, Why Did I Make It?
Whether it's of any real use or not, I don't know. At least it's not completely pointless. My main goal was simply to get some experience of submitting (and updating) apps to the market. Just to see how it all works -- ready for when I get my other app ideas ready for launch.
Turns out that submitting apps to the Android Market is fairly straightforward and surprisingly quick. From first submission to going live in the market took <2hrs! Whether that's a good thing or not I don't know. Do Android apps get checked out or just auto-approved? If there's no checking then it would certainly explain why the market has so many low quality apps on it.
Within a couple of days of putting the app on the market it's in the 100-500 downloads bracket. Actually it's had 154 downloads. Got to say I'm surprised by that. Not only that but also that nobody has yet given a 1-star review to say how pointless it is. Yet.
All in it's been an enjoyable experience both making and launching an app. Seeing it get used and people give feedback is always a buzz for any developer.
Now, to concentrate on my truly world-changing app ideas. Muhaha...
Nice work.
There is definitely no Android Market review process. Apps should be available worldwide within a few of minutes of submitting them, though it seems to have slowed down a bit recently with the addition of the web interface and multiple APK support for single listings.

Thanks. Means a lot coming from you. Assuming you mean it? :-)
There's not even a bot that inspects the code for malicious intent? Scary! No wonder the Android Market is the way it is.

Hi Jake,
I am a Flex Developer and very interested in the new mobile app dev platform. I have not built any yet but will be starting soon.
I'm wondering if you could provide a simple tutorial for building this or another app and getting it deployed etc. to the device and the app store(s).
If your able? I'm sure many would love to see it. . .

Hi Steven,
The beauty of Flex dev is the wealth of help already out there. Most of it from Adobe. I'm sure you're aware of it already, but, if not, you need to check out http://tv.adobe.com/ and the various other sources of tutorials on Flex mobile dev.
If I wrote about it I'd just be covering ground already covered (and doing a bad job of it!)
Flattered you asked me to though!
Jake
