Feed My Hunger For iPad Apps!
Less than a week after wondering how long I'd last without an iPad and I now own one. On Sunday we drove in to town, had some lunch then went to our local "Apple store". Much better to get an instant fix than ordering online and waiting for the delivery.
I spent the rest of the day teasing myself by leaving the box unopened for as long as I could. This turned out to be a mistake, as, while I waited, my internet connection got turned off. By the time I'd excitedly sat down to play with the iPad late Sunday afternoon it turned out to be as much use as the proverbial chocolate tea pot. An brand new iPad with no internet connection is no fun at all.
It wasn't until the next night I got a chance to play proper and install some apps - which is when the brilliance of the iPad/app-store combination really comes to light. Since then I've installed the usual suspects - Flipboard, iBooks, Adobe Ideas, BBC News, some games (that burger-making one) and a handful of kids drawing apps. Enough to turn it in to something useful. Already I can see where it fits in to my life - somewhere between my laptop and my phone. Surprisingly, Karen has warmed to it too. Not half as much as the kids though, who you have wrestle it from.
What I want now is recommendations for useful apps and fun games. They don't have to be productivity apps. Anything you think is a must-have. Feed me!
Try 'Angrybirds' :-)

Tried that but it didn't hold my attention span for long and I uninstalled it. Maybe I'll give it another go at some point.

Out of interest, which model/spec did you go for?

The wifi-only 32gb version (would have gone for 16gb but they were out of stock - impatience cost me £70!).

A lot that have already been mentioned, plus:
Tweetings - my favourite iPad Twitter client (multiple users, easy sharing of tweets etc)
Reeder - the best RSS feed reader I've found for either iPad or iPhone
EverNote - for note taking and sync with laptop/iPhone
Dash Four - 4Square checkin and visualisation
WunderRadio (iPhone app) - free access on 1000s of online radio stations, including BBC which is missing from a lot of apps.
Flickpad - access to photos from friends on Facebook and Flickr
Loving all these tips!

I haven't actually used this, but it looks good. It's a remote desktop app for the iPad (Logmein Ignition);

If you go the route of jailbreaking (JB) the iPad, which is now legal, you can run the process right from Safari by visiting http://www.jailbreakme.com/.
Once the JB is complete you'll be able to install (from Cydia) what I consider one of the most useful applications, FullForce. Any iPhone only application looks terrible on the iPad, since it shows up as the default size. You can click the 2x button, but it just makes what is visible on the screen much larger and pixelated. The FullForce app fixes the issue by actually resizing iPhone only applications to work on the iPad. Go here (http://www.ievolution.ca/ipad/cydia-app-fullforce-for-ipad/) for more information.
On a JB iPad you can also run apps like Backgrounder, which allows multi-tasking until iOS 4 is released for the iPad in November.
In regards to actual Apple Store apps here are a few of my favorites:
- Pandora (listen to music as you would do through Pandora.com )
- Marvel (read comic books ... some are free)
- Flixster - (movie times, reviews, previews, etc.)
- Zinio (read magazines)
- Twitterrific (best looking Twitter interface ... IMHO)
- Discover (turns Wikipedia into a magazine, which you can read)
- Kindle (far superior interface to the standard iPhone)
- Talking Tom (fun for the kids)
- Remote Desktop by Mocha Soft (allows RDP access to an enabled PC from your iPad)
- Google Earth (why not?)
- KeyIngredient (free cookbook)
- Slate (magazine-style format of Slate website)

Remember you can also get a cable to hook the iPad to your TV. So any movies or TV shows you load on it can be played on the bigger TV screen.
This also works if you have NetFlix - you can stream to the TV as well.
So in addition to all the apps and games, we use it as a portable movie player also - either in the car (the mini-van has a TV) or around the house.

A second for Conquist - a great Risk style game.

Angry birds is great, but only takes about an hour to complete all levels. Cat Physics, although an iphone app, is free and is equally fun physics puzzles.
Googler Reader, TVersity media server on the PC for streaming movies and audio to the ipad via browser. Netflix is great but doesnt work in the UK without a US VPN. BBC iPlayer rocks.
Civilization Revolution (CIV REV) great game take to the iPad.
WeatherStation, looks like a big LCD weather station.
Mashable, FlightCtrl HD, Geocaching, Logmein, Wikihood, Instapaper, Voice Memo, Speedtest, Atomic web browser (lets you pretend to be other browsers), SoundHound

Not iPad specific - but Sickipedia has had a lot of use on mine (warning: very sick jokes), that and Highways Agency traffic, Photoshop Mobile, Last.fm, Sky+ and BBC News...
