My Acceptance Speech for Best Lotus Blogger Award
By my reckoning the awards dinner for the Lotus User Group award would have taken place last night at LotusSphere. As I couldn't be there I was asked (the day before voting closed) to record an acceptance speech. At first this was "just in case", but I asked if they couldn't wait a day to see if I did in fact win and they then said I had a clear lead that would take more than a day to pass.
So, yeah, I won and here's the acceptance speech I sent over (they asked for video, but I'm just not comfortable sitting in a room on my own talking to a camera, like I'm yer man Tom Cruise or something). Needless to say recording acceptance speeches isn't something I'm used to. This one is about the fifth attempt. Next time(?) I'll probably write something down first.
As I said before, I'm in two minds about the award itself — is it for 2007, 2008 or is it, as the award's description suggests, more or a life-time achievement award? Here is that description (again, emphasis my own):
...this award will go to the blogger who, over time, has provided exceptional information, education and community support...
Although I was accused of being "tacky" for adding emphasis I think it's important to know exactly what an award is for. If it's merely an award for 2008 then I don't deserve to be the outright winner. If it's an award to say thanks for all the educating work you've done over the years then I'm probably the only contender!
This site started eight years ago with the sole aim of educating people. I felt compelled to do this, mainly because there just weren't any other sites where you could learn web development with Domino. To an extent the same is still true and I think that's reflected in this site's continuing popularity.
Over the last 8 years I've put in a lot of time - and I mean a lot, as in loads, of time - in building the content of this site. Although I don't do this for the recognition it's always nice to get it and I'm taking this award as the closest thing I'll ever get to official recognition of the work I've done.
Anyway, what I really want to say in this entry is a massive thank you to those who voted. Whether or not I'm any clearer who or what Lotus User Group is or what the award is in fact for is irrelevant. What matters is that it was an award voted for by the people. As I said in the "speech" I'm flattered and amazed that I won and I really do mean that. Despite appearances I have a soft inner and the fact so many people took the time to vote for me really is touching.
Every now and then it takes something like this to happen to remind me not only why I should carry on investing time in the site but that it is worth it and people want it to carry on. So, to all who voted, you've just bought at least another couple of years of codestore ;o)
Congratulations on your award !!!
Congrats on your Lotusphere 2008: LotusUserGroup.org award!!
Congratulations...this is a well deserved award for a blog that has educated and continues to educate many up and coming Notes Web developers.
Well, well done! You earned it, Jake.
Congratulations ! You're making a very good job in this site. A lot of people benefit from your information and researching so they "paid back" in the voting.
Just go on with what you're been doing all this years.
Congrats! Well deserved.
Bloody brilliant!!! Well deserved, take a bow!
Congrats Jake!
Well done Jake!
I'm glad you pointed out your joke about knowing that you're always been the best Lotus blogger- American audiences aren't renowned for detecting sarcasm but this one evaded me as well!
Jake, very well done and well deserved, congratulations.
Well done Jake!!!
Thanks for all the help through the site.
So it turns out the best man won ;)
Congratulations, you deserve it.
You are among the 3 Domino blogs I still read, in times when I do no Domino related stuff and for me the technologically most interesting.
Congratulations Jake! You really deserve it.
Thanks all!!
I had to add the "that's a joke" disclaimer as my sarcasm is so subtle even I don't know when I'm trying to be funny some times. Either way the translation was bound to fail mid-Atlantic.
They asked me to keep it "light hearted", which is a tall order when you have no idea who is listening or what the atmosphere is. In an earlier take I'd said "Sorry I can't be there, but it's too far to come just to hang out with a load of nerds". I decided that was just to risky - could easily go down like a lead balloon...
Congrats Jake!
Thanks for excellent articles posted over years.
Congrats, Jake... really. :)
Congratulations Jake.
well deserved, congratulations.
Congrats !
Your English accent is a real pleasure to hear. Do someone already tall you that you have the same voice as Hugh Grant ?!
"you have the same voice as Hugh Grant"
LOL. That's the first time anybody has said that. It couldn't be further from the truth though. Hugh Grant has what would be considered a posh accent or Received Pronunciation (RP). I have a partly-diluted Northern mining-town accent that is anything but posh. In fact the opposite of.
I suppose I can see where you're coming from though Julien. Personally, I couldn't tell the difference between the accent of the poshest man in Paris and a farmer from Lyon, although to you it would be as obvious as a brick.
'nough of congrats, back to facts.
Tell us more about this exiting new project your on: codestore.not
I just hope it's not just a synonym for closing down codestore, the one resource, that's always been there and always had the solution I was looking for, already.
"codestore.not"
It nearly went to "Take 6" because of that Freudian slip ;o)
Congrats Jake, excellent stuff
Congratulations,
and keep it coming...
Congratz Jake! :-)
Congrats :)
edbrill and codestore, my two lotus sites i visit daily. Gained a wealth of knowledge from here, in fact, i think I even bought you some books one time for a database I downloaded !
Anyways, top work, well deserved @
Congrats Jake.
I was at the Ext.nd session yesterday and I can say that there was a collective jaw-drop when people saw what you could do with it in Domino. Well done to you and your co-suspects.
Congratulations!
It was well deserved.
Congrats Jake !!!!
You really deserve it (even if there is no 1M$US prize attached to it). And I hope you will keep on going for quite a few more years.
Congrats Jake!!!
I have been following your site many of the eight years and the service you have been providing the community is top notch.
Congratulations! Well deserved, no doubt about that!
Congrats Jake!
It is well deserved!
Well Deserved! Wish you were here in Orlando this week.
Congrats
Congratulations, Jake! Yay, more Codestore! (You need to plan a big party - maybe a trip to the 'sphere for Codestore's 10th anniversary.)
Congrats Jake,
A well deserved award if you ask me. Thanks for all your sharing wisdon of the past years and I'm looking forward to the oncoming years.
Well done Jake, and very well deserved too!
"Sorry I can't be there, but it's too far to come just to hang out with a load of nerds". See, now you said it :-) Congrats, well deserved.
Actually Jake, re the voice. Your voice reminds me of Richard Bacon (Radio 5, ex Blue Peter) !
Bravo Jake!
That's uncanny Richard as Richard Bacon is from the same ex-mining town as I am. I met him a couple of times as a friend-of-a-friend, but before he became (in)famous. Apparently he's lost touch with his roots now ;o)
LOL. Sorry, your may be right Jake, I can't detect posh accent as I am French and my English is sooooo bad. But I can easily detect American from Scottish from English ^_^ and you have a very English accent.
Out of subject -> You're now the N°1 Domino blogger but soon I'll be the N°1 half-marathon Domino blogger. I am preparing myself to broke your 104 min score ;-) Be scare Jake !
Congratullations Jake.... Excelent work.
Well done Jake. You deserve to be honored for your selfless contribution to our Lotus community.
Best regards
Dan

Jake, I think you should post all 6 takes for us ;-)
Congrats by the way, you've done a great job here with codestore.
Congratulations. I'm sure you've noticed, but I just wanted to point out that you've got the "who's who" of Lotus blogging in your comments.
Looking at how your content has improved over the years, I have no doubt that not only will you continue to be the "go to" site for Domino developers, but that you will continue to raise the bar for all of us.
Thanks for all the examples and teaching that you have included in this site.
Congratulations on your award !
Congratulations Jake. Well deserved.

It's nice to see you officially get recognized for something that frequent visitors to your website knew all along...that you are a tremendous resource to Developers.

The only problem with recognition is that others can pay attention on you... By others, I mean M$!
Imagine in the future codestore.net being a repository for .net development and not Domino anymore? What a nightmare!!! :-)
Long live for you, your family and your website!
Rafael
Many Congratulations Jake !!!
I'm not surprised :)
Congrats, Jake! And thanks for sharing at least a smidgen of the live content from LS. Now I feel like I was there for 53 seconds. :-)
I think anyone who has read you would know you were joking - I did - I was chuckling by the time the disclaimer came up. You did just fine, Hugh.
Congrats!
And perhaps Hugh will play you when they make the movie "Codestore Hill".

"It was a dark and stormy night. The hacker sat in the dim glow of a computer monitor as he picking away at the keyboard ..."
