My Charitable Efforts For This Year
This site has always been — and always will be — run for free. There have never been adverts and I've always resisted the temptation to ask for a subscription fee. Apart from asking for technical help every now and then I never really ask for much.
All I do ask from time to time is for a donation to whatever charitable event I'm about to take part in. In the past I've always been grateful for the amazing response to this.
My chosen charity this year is close to home, where, as they say, charity starts. Last week I mentioned my long-term friend Shaun who, like me, is a dad to a young boy, George.
George was born prematurely and, as a result, has athetoid cerebral palsy. His parents, Shaun and Natasha, need help in providing him with essential supplies and care. Sadly, as expensive as they are, these aren't provided by the state. He also needs expensive toys to keep him entertained and caring for around the clock.
The charity (which I should probably mention is unregistered) is called George's Army. As master of all things technical, I've thrown together a website to keep a record of what's going on. You can read more about George's story there.
Next weekend a group of us are riding the 140 mile coast-to-coast cycle ride, here in the UK. If you would like to sponsor us then you can do so here. No payment is required until after the event!
Before Felix was born I never once assumed he would be in perfect health. The fact that he was and continues to do well is nothing short of a miracle of nature — something I never take for granted.
Whether you're a parent or not I'm sure you can imagine what George's parents must be going through. All I ask is that you see if you can't help out in any way possible. Tomorrow I will talk more about the incentives I'm offering in return for your financial help.
I'm in. God has blessed me and my two miracles more than I ever dreamed possible. Have a good and safe ride, men.
Thanks Jerry. I knew I'd be able to rely on you as a donor.
Now, where's everybody else? I hope I won't come out of this questioning my commitment to this site...
I'm in too.
A suggestion though. I think you could really increase the response if you would commit to doing a live blog-a-thon during the ride. <g>
Thanks Dave. Not impossible. It shouldn't be too hard to moblog as we go - assuming we have reception. It would have to be a resurrected "Jake's Rides" {Link} though as Typepad already have that functionality.
Nice idea. Might well do that.
Jake - I'm a regular viewer of your site, although I rarely, if ever, comment.
I'd be happy to chip in and I hope other 'lurkers' like me do likewise.
Cheers
JP
count me in --- do you take Aussie Dollars?
I'm in
Although without sounding like Mr System Tester - I pledged yesterday lunchtime and can;t see me listed on the page! Happy to keep pledging - just don;t want people to suddenly think I am pledging £1m by the time all my amounts are added up!
Jake - don't ever question your commitment to this blog. With things like this, it shows that the Notes/Web/Blog community is a bunch of positive, intelligent, articulate, friendly people who know a good cause and a good intention when they see it. We should all find time in our busy Microsoft-hating days to help each other!
Nick. The "amount" field is in GBP, so you'd need to do the conversion from AUD. There's a link to a convertor website next to the field.
Mike. It looks like we need System Testers. My PHP obviously isn't as good as my Domino ;o) Could you try again. Don't worry there aren't five other pledges lurking in there - I just checked.
Jake
I am in too. Nice idea Jake and have a good ride !
