Certified Domino Hacker
The other morning I was laying in bed with my first cup of tea watching Iain Lamb's Hack Day Talk, The New Hacker's Toolkit.
Apparently it's now cool to be a "hacker". While most of think of hackers as nasty people who break in to computer systems the ultra-cool next-YouTube wannabes now refer to what they do as hacking. While it makes sense to think of what we do as a kind of hacking it makes me cringe to see a grown man stand up and use the word without any sense of irony, truly believing he's on the cutting edge of coolness.
Anyway. During the talk there's a screen in the 13th minute where he lists essential tools for hackers. The list includes Firebug, DOM Inspector, IE Developer Toolbar and Parallels. All of which I happen to use. Although a little disappointing it was nice to see my toolbox is complete and I've not been struggling along without some wonderful time-saving piece of kit.
Almost five years since I wrote about The software I take everywhere. While a couple of them remain on my list it's now very much out of date. Tomorrow I will list an updated account of what software I rely on in my role as a Domino hacker.
Actually, it's the other way round. The negative (most common) use of the word is newer than the "positive" use.

Right. From now on I want to be known as The Domino Hacker.
Shame my firewall doesnt like the word hacker.
With Domino you'd more like the hack n' duct taper jake.
Sounds like a detective novel villian... The Domino Hacker... his calling card is a double-six domino left between the teeth of his victums.... bwahahaha.....
I've been calling myself a "hackmeyer" - a. one who performs the action of hacking to attain a positive goal. b. one who is a dumb@ss. Also takes the edge off when you say it in front of your security officer.
Jake, surely you mean "haxx0r"?
Hi all!
I think the "hacker" word was used and is being used *BAD*. In my opinion a hacker is a guy that want to know The 'how and why' something works and achieve it ( in all matters, not only computers ). He is always looking for knowledge and *want* to share it with all of us.
People, when are thinking in a 'hacker', would be thinking in a 'cracker', a guy with *very* different motivation ...
Regards.
I agree with tq. If you use the moniker, you must use the lexicon.
"1mA teh uber 1337 sn1per haxxorrz"
Haha, that hack attempt was lame :D
From Jargon-file (The New Hacker's Dictionary):
"1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. RFC1392, the Internet Users' Glossary, usefully amplifies this as: A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular."
