Birthday Blues
I am 31 today. I know it's just a number and everything, but this one feels a lot more depressing than 30 did. What must 35+ be like? Best not to think about it I suppose.
Having such an understanding boss I've been given the afternoon off to go shopping. Maybe I'll cheer myself up with a little treat.
I was going to go to an art shop and buy a selection of brushes, oil paints and a canvas. Karen must have known this and so I found myself unwrapping them this morning. Why? I'm going to learn to paint!
My inspiration comes from, of all places, Rolf Harris. There was a documentary on New Year's Day about his portrait of the Queen. He made it look fun and not that hard, which appeals to me. So I went and bought his book and have been reading up on basic techniques.
Karen thinks it's another fad, but I'm hoping not. While I'm open to the idea that I will be awful at it I think it's one of those things you can only get better at. Plus it's cheap, you can do it any time of day, you don't need to leave the house and I could carry on doing it until I'm twice as old. Sixty two! Now there's a scary thought.
Wish me luck. I'll talk more about it if anything good comes of it. If not you'll never hear me mention it again.
Many happy returns, Jake. Enjoy your afternoon off!
Jake,
35 is no different to 31 - I have found that once I got past 25, all birthdays merged into one!!!! Age is irrelevant now - except for car insurance!
Enjoy the painting, and Happy Birthday
Mike
Happy Birthday have a good one.
Everyone tells you that 40 is the big change but I found that it hit me at 35, about that time I noticed that all the demographic questionaires seemed to say 18 to 24 , 25 to 34 and then 35 to retirement,
I suddenly felt like I should be looking for my pipe and slipperes
Happy Birthday Jake! :)
Happy birthday Jake. Having hit 30 last year myself and spent the whole weekend in Dublin, I just know this years gonna be an anti-climax.
Happy Birthday!
Don't use Oil, get Acylic paint.
Oil takes months to dry.
Are you patent your own Colour, like Yves Klien monochrome Blue???
Happy Birthday!!!
All the best Jake, and don't worry about it.
31 is the new 21 !!
Better another birthday than the alternative!
Happy Birthday Jake! ;-)
Hey old man, happy birthday, look , I'm just in the middle of the 35s and is not bad at all.
Regarding your painting, GO AHEAD!! I started to do the same thing as well and is very relaxing.
Happy Birthday
.::Alex::.
Age is irrelevent. I'm 38 in 4 days time. And I still feel like I do when I was 31. (Except the waist line has added a couple of inches)
Hippy Burpday an' all that.
Happy Birthday Jake!!
Still two years ahead! Now the only difference in the years is watching my kids getting older and bigger.
Happy Birthday Jake!!
First of all, have a happy birthday.
Second, 35 is not that bad, and I'm not scared of 40 (I'm 36). I think it has more to do with how you feel and what you do. I play electric guitar and I have a strong preference for a very heavy distorted sound, so when I play some Green Day songs for my kids and some Iron Maiden for my personnal enjoyment, I don't feel old at all.
Now painting is an activity that would make me feel old though ; )
Happy 31st and many more to come!
31 sucks - after that, its not so bad. As Mike (almost) wisely notes, the older you get the more irrelevant they are.
Happy birthday
Jon
Jake -
I spend half my life moving from one fad to another. The great thing about fads is you get enjoyment out of learning something new without the highs and lows of making it your life's passion. Happy b-day and Enjoy painting!

Happy birthday Jake !!
According to my history, you have 4 years until you are considered one of the older guys not one of the young go-getters .. **sigh**..
Seriously .. many returns mate .. and keep up the great posts and maintain the passion(for your work!)
Happy birthday Jake and go on...
happy birthday jake!!!!
Happy Birthday Jake,
I sure know how you feel : I'm turning 34 tomorrow (the 12th). About getting older : I don't older on my birthday. I feel older when I go to the office Christmas party and A LOT of computer geeks are/look actually younger than me. That hurts.
About having your birthday on January 11th/12th : is it just me or if you have your birthday in the beginning of January you can't buy anything on sale after Christmas, just because there is a slight chance that you might be getting it as a birthday present?
Cheers.
Happy birthday Jake, RockOn!
Many happy returns, Jake
Belated happy birthday wishes, Jake. One year older means one year wiser, I like to think.
Cheers mate, here's to many more! (Yes, I'm wishing you live to be an old geezer. With any luck you will) ;-)
Jake stop being a big wuss. I'm 38, still feel 28 (although I dont act it) and don't reckon there will be much change to that mental state until I'm 40.
Look at it this way you've probably got at least another 40 years or so before you'll be back in nappies again :)
Oh and good on ya for the painting, I always liked pen and ink myself, still do when the weathers good and I get the urge.
Happy Birthday,
U have an excellent blog.
Best wishes and Happy Birthday, Jake!
I remember when I turned 31 ... vaguely, distantly.
You'll survive!
Have a happy!
- Rob
Happy Birthday, Jake !
I'm 44, as you says "...it's just a number...".
20, 30, 40, 50, ... for me it's the same.
I remember when I whas 20, for me, the "old" persons were 40 and now I'm an old person... ;-)
Make what you do think good for you: painting , music,... but don't forget your family and your friends.
Try to keep a "child spirit".
Soon we will call you Jake "Michelangelo" Howlett
Best regards,
Thierry
PS : Sorry for my English...I'm French :-((
Hey Jake,
(I was in Mexico last week, so I'm just now getting caught up) ...Sheesh, man, you're just a PUP!
I'm 49 and feel great. I did finally stop playing soccer a couple of years back after an eye injury (couldn't stand playing with goggles). But this is a great age. The career is going fine, I'm semi-stable financially, health is great, I feel like I've got a bit of perspective but am still young enough to ignore my better judgements :)
31 was tough for me, since that was when I changed careers from musician to geek ...starting over in anything is draining. You've already got a successful career, so enjoy!
As implied by one of the earlier comments, any day you wake up is a good day. But 'age' means nothing. Attitude is far more important (I think that's what old folks say).
Cheers,
Joe
Jake--
I've been thinking of getting back into painting & this post may be just the inspiration I need.
Here's hoping for digital photos of your masterpieces soon.
