Spell Checking in Safari

Here's a nice feature of the Mac and Safari:

grab

This is the standard textarea used for commenting on this site. Notice the in-line spell checking. Notice also the dictionary. Right-click any word and you can look it up in the dictionary. On Windows I find myself having to launch browsers and paste text in to Dictionary.com.

Nice features, but the best bit about the dictionary on the Apple is that it's system-wide (new in Tiger I think). If I tell Safari to learn the spelling of a word I don't need to do the same in Mail or Stickies or whatever. In Windows you can find yourself having to teach every single application separately.

It's a shame Firefox (1.0.4 out!) and Thunderbird don't share this dictionary. Maybe they will in future versions? It's also a shame things like HTMLArea-style editors don't work in Safari. Hey, we can't have it all.

I'll try not to keep going off on Apple-based tangents. I just wanted to write something down quickly as I've got lots on today and something is always better than nothing, right?

    Cooool

  1. Last night I was creating a brochure for my parents fruit and vegetable stand using Pages. When I did a spell check of "brussel sprouts" it showed the, spelling, definition and a picture of what a brussel sprout plant looks like.

I thought this was way cool... Apple has a knack for getting the little details right....

Fredrick. The Mac (and Tiger in particular) is littered with these must-have how-did-I-manage-without-it features. Get one!

  2. firefox has a plugin which does a similar thing. if you select a word and then rightclick it will show option of searching that word on dictionary.com and then show the word page. I know its not as cool as mac but still works in windows world. what do u think?

This used to work for me under Panther, but now that I have Tiger and Safari 2.0, the spelling options found under Edit->Spelling are all greyed out
