Life's A Little Hectic
Forgive me if this site seems neglected for a few days. It feels like I'm juggling a lot of balls at the moment and I need some time to get things in order. Dad's downstairs beavering away on the shelves and I'm having a break from being his gopher to get some "work" done.
The girls break up today for two weeks of school holidays. Tomorrow I've got a wedding in Kent of all places! Tuesday is my deadline for having the room with the shelves in it finished, ready for Karen having work-mates round. While all this is going on I need to earn a living as well and have a few deadlines to reach next week. Next weekend is a four-dayer where tradition has it we need to go away somewhere. I must remember to start appreciating those rare times when I having nothing pressing to do.
What I really don't need in the middle of all this is a soundcard that is not quite as plug-n-play as they'd have you believe.
There's only so many times you can turn down a Skype conversation with a potential client because you don't have sound on your PC. How professional does that look?! So, this week I downloaded Skype and ordered one of these and some of these. Not only that, but my ISP are doubling my connection speed to 1GB (for free!), so I can hopefully expect decent results from VoIP to customers with equally large connections.
I chose Creative's SoundBlaster as I expected their stuff to work without too much hassle. It doesn't work at all. Their diagnostics software says it does though. I've done all the usual uninstalling/rebooting, there's no IRQ conflicts and nothing is obviously wrong. My only option now is to call their Support line. Problem - the whole of Europe is expected to call Ireland (which, by the way, is an international call from the UK). Now, calling any support line is a pain and takes forever, but when it's international rates! I don't think I'll be calling them in a rush. Unless I had Skype of course. Which I don't, for the obvious reasons. Anyway, what would I do if they ask me to reboot?
I used to enjoy frigging about with hardware and BIOS settings to get things working. That's when I've got the time and patience though. Right now I don't and so it looks like it's going to have to go back.
I know the feeling!
I've just started a new job, i'm in the process of sorting out our new house (decorating etc...) and spent the last few evenings trying to set up a bl**dy wireless network at home...
Oh, and did I mention my car door's decided to stop opening, and i've got to drive to Liverpool for a wedding after work tonight??? It never rains Jake, it just p*sses down!
Still, it'll just make sure we both enjoy the bank holiday weekend even more!! Just make sure you leave your work/PC well alone for those few days!
Nice to hear somebody else is stressed ;o)
Hopefully the weather will hold out. I've just turned off the heating for the first time this year and sat in the garden to eat my lunch. Life feels good. Definitely going to have a few days sans PC.
Jake...
"doubling my connection speed to 1GB"
Hollycow! Donw here on Brazil you can´t even wonder on have such internet connection home. I have a 600kpbs ADLS connection that costs me 50 USD/month. Most of the people have 300kbps connections or less.
Oh boy, I really must get away from here... :(

Jake, you don't need a sound card with that Plantronics headset, the USB thingy does it all for you.
When I said "for free". I should point out the doubling of speed is at no extra charge to the usual "business" rate of £45 per month, which get me a 20:1 contention ratio.
Andy. Really? Doh!
Ok I know that. But how is the speed of your internet connection?
Fast! ;o)
Trust Andy. As far as I know, *all* the USB headsets come with their own "sound card". I haven't seen one that didn't. That's probably why they are much more expensive than regular old headsets.
heh, Pipex are doubling my connection from 1mb to 2mb for free!!
must be a pipex initiative!
Jake,
you really don't need a soundcard with that Plantronics headset. It will just add some confusion which audio device to use. Just make sure you set the Creative thingy as the preferred device in Control Panel and the "USB audio" in Skype's Preferences-Headset/Handset.
Happy skyping...
P.S. Are you going for the Skypeout?
Jade, very nice job!!! My hats off to you my man. You should stand proud. Naow that you are a man of the wood, do you have a plane? If not, check out planes, and get yourself a few nice ones and dump those power sanders!!!
Would you consider doing do an article on profile documents - how they work, mangement of them etc.? I find they come in handy for setting up admin from ends for WEB apps - the contents of the header, nav, JS varables, etc. But I do not know much about how to manage them - finding them in notes.
Keep up the good work
