Internet Explorer For Power Users

Do you love the advanced features of Mozilla but still find yourself using IE? You ought to try Maxthon. Formerly known as MyIE2, Maxthon is IE for the power user.

In the ideal world we'd all use our favourite browser all of the time. Some of the time though we need to use the other one. Reasons vary but I still find myself using IE more than I'd like to have to. Internet banking is one good reason. Plus, lots of sites plain don't work in anything but IE. The main reason for me is that I need to develop sites solely for use with IE. When this is the case I find myself missing things like tabbed browsing and the such.

Maxthon has lots of these things that Mozilla has spoiled us with. I've been using it for a few days now and I'm still finding lots of nice little features. Plus, it's freeware. I'm very fussy when it comes to what I will and won't install on my main PC. Maybe it doesn't count for much, but I've installed Maxthon and have no regrets.

When I find the time I'll try and list some of its features and give it a more meaningful review. It's hard at the moment as I'm working at a client's site until Christmas and haven't got as much spare time as I'm used to.

Avant Browser is a very nice browser, freeware and based on IE too.

I´m using this browser for a long time now and I can´t step over to Mozilla Firefox because I love this one!

I use maxthon at work as we are an IE shop, so it provides many of the features of Firefox but still uses the IE rendering engine. I have also found that the RoboForm plugin is invaluable for testing sites.

  1. I also use AvantBrowser, and like Arjan, have found it impossible to switch over to Mozilla/Firefox because it adds all of the browsing features you need on top of IE.

  2. I'm sure you already know this, but Firefox has an extension that lets you change user agents to be able to browse in IE mode.

  3. Also, you might take a look at this when it comes out:

Netscape is apparently releasing a new browser sometime that can not only change your user agent, but your rendering engine (like Windows Media Player, it takes advantage of the IE components already installed on your machine.)

Dave and Arjun, FF has more to offer than cool features.

Apart from the need to have IE for web testing, I choose FF not only for the browser features but because it's also much faster. After using FF fort so long, rowsing in IE is like so much treacle. Bleh...

    Andrew,

I´m not using IE. I am using Avant Browser. This one is based on IE, but much faster!

  4. Avant Browser still is no Browser, you could install as a stand-alone product. It's an extension to an existing IE installation. Thus, the speed and capabilities of the rendering enginge remain the same.

I can understand people preferring those add-ons over a regular IE installation. But luckily MY bank does NOT force me into using IE (or even a Windows OS) for online banking, so my usage of IE is mostly limited to windowsupdate and development where customers ask for it.
