Reaping the Reward

Imagine the scenario. You call Lotus Support with a problem to which they have no solution. So, you spend four days finding the answer on your own instead. You then get asked by Lotus Support what the solution was. What do you do?

  1. Tell them the answer, in the hope it will be shared with the great community?
  2. Sell the answer on eBay and send them a link to the auction page?
  3. Keep it to yourself?

Wouldn't it be great if we could all claim back some money for the time we waste fixing bugs!? I could probably buy a brand new car!

Thanks to Brian Sniegocki for the link. More >

Guys, hope you can help, im stuck with an anoying problem on an Excel Web Query. I'll try and explain it as simple as possible. Right, here goes...

I have an EWQ that submits the name of a member of staff. This first submital then throws up another page with a hyperlink on it to view the employee' history. The problem being, this hyperlink carries the employees' staff number and NOT their name. My problem is that; I do not know how to get the EWQ to, instead of downloading the first submital page, instead follow the link and then download the consequential page with the history on it. This is really anoying me. I've only started using EWQ's this week but i have a fair grasp of their workings. I just cant think of a way to ignore the first page and load the second one instead.

I was thinking of VLOOKUP, but this is NOT practical as there are over 30'000 staff members, which is constantly being updated. I would much rather a simpler solution via this method.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help me...?

    Thanks in advance guys,

Paddle n Creek this end :(

    D.

  1. Was that last comment by Damo a real comment or a joke? I'm not trying to be rude... I honestly couldn't tell.

What Damo did was find this page, probably via a google, then posted his request there. Twelve minutes later he realised it's a blog and that the best place to get our attention is to post it to today's entry. Some folk, hey!?

  2. Ah. I guess at least there's some small bit of logic there, then. Maybe someday one of us will write an entry outlining the difference between a blog and a forum and paid vendor support, and we could all refer to it.

I suggested a few weeks ago on Ed Brill's blog that IBM should have found some way of rewarding people for their contributions to the developerworks forums - I suggested free ticket for Lotusphere to the most frequent (helpful) contributors. (I specifically had in mind that Jake's recent attendance at Lotussphere had been enabled by another company.) In the last 10 years in which I have used online communities, I cannot think of another online community that has been as helpful as the Notes.net community, and IBM really should be recognizing the value of those contributions.

  3. Here here Bernard, at the least some token from IBM / Lotus would go a long way. Your right Jake should get a ticket to Lotussphere, airfair and hotel too!. He would contribute more than most of the IBM'ers there who get the full ride.

  4. My my my, isn't that a little bit broad of a brush stroke to paint.

I get it - just not sure what the right way (or even feasible way) to do something interesting and useful may be.

But since Jake himself seemed to think that speaking at Lotusphere was beneath him (see {Link} ), I'll have to look to the hundreeds of session proposals we did receive to find people to recognize and reward. It's a start.

Hey, Ed - I'll put a punt in for our very own Wild Bill, esp if his session proposal on OO lotusscript development is accepted.

I'm sure you could get him through quite legitimately on the Entertainment (ie provision of) budget!! :-)

  5. Yes Ed I was throwing a whole bucket on the wall ;-), but I am reflecting on what I am seeing others (hint:MS) doing, bringing the best and brightest in as their own to speak. On the feasiblity side, I understand that Sphere is going to focus more on current (ND6, ND6.5) tech this year. My management would love to see what others have accomplished and the developers would love to see how it was done. Wow, there is a great idea, a BP session where the application is presented, what the ROI was, how quickly it was developed and an AD session to focus on 'how' it was done. This, I feel, would be a very valuable set of sessions.

Talk all you want against MS, but at least the have awards for people who participate in Newsgroups or User Groups.

  6. yes, I'm aware of the MVP programme.

We've done some other things like the LDD spotlight, but those are days gone by. I am not sure I can do something on my own but I am considering possibilities.
