Goodbye Cromarty

When I got back from Lotushphere, this time last month, I mentioned briefly that my iBook, Cromarty, had broken while I was away. Volker was stood next to me as it happened and assures me it was the Logic Board at fault, covered by a free repair program. A good job really as this happened within a month of its warranty expiring.

This would be really annoying if it weren't for the fact I don't use it anymore. In fact, I still think it chose to break merely because I was talking to Volker about how I don't like it and planned on selling it (I still do!). I've been on the phone to Apple today and they're sending for it to picked up. As soon as it returns, it's on eBay, along with the iPod. They just don't play a part in my life anymore. Not using the Tube everyday means I don't need to blank out the world around me and I now know that, should I need to test websites on Mac OS, I can use free services.

Here's a tip for any iBook owner having problems. Before the guy I spoke to at Apple would consider it for Logic Board replacement he had me do a Power Management Unit reset (which also resets the Logic Board, apparently). To do this you:

  1. Power-down.
  2. Disconnect the power-cable.
  3. Holding down the shift, control and option keys press the power-on button for three seconds.
  4. Wait five seconds and power-on as normal.

Needless to say this didn't work for me and the taste of sour Apple remains. Definitely the last time I fall for the got-to-have-one-of-them looks of the Apple range. My advice to anybody else who's fallen for their charms - try before you buy!

It's the old-style 10GB. Not thought about a price yet. Make me an offer...

Not sure of the second hand market value of such an item.. And a nice shiny ipod mini is tempting... although it would be nice to have a 10gb model rather than a measly 4gb model..

Some people seem to have more luck than you, Jake :-)

  1. I've got an iBook as well, and its nice and everything. But personally, I don't see what it's giving me that Wintel machine couldn't.

In fact I'd have more options under the Wintel machine since I'd be on the same 'format' as everyone else :)

  2. Having been through two wintel laptops at considerably more expense than any desktop, until laptops are throw-away cheap, I'm just off them anyway. Personally, a desktop or underdesk box seems more the way to go unless you're travelling a lot as the hardware is cheaper and far more upgradable.... but that's just my tarnished 2p...

  3. the IBM thinkpad is a tough laptop for the rugged developer. I have used Dell, Compaq, Tosheba, Acer, and HP, and the thinkpad has outlasted them all.

  4. Did you re-connect the power lead between points 3 and 4?

I am not sure there is a service that can test sites that require authentication and/or data entry ie selecting & entering data on the Mac. I could be wrong...
