A Hundred Domino Hacks

Thanks to David Churchland for treating me to O'Reilly's Windows XP Hacks - 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tricks. I've already seen a couple I am about to apply. Don't want to share any here though for obvious copyright reasons. If you want to get an idea of what's included, have a look at Annoyances.org.

It all reminds me of May 2001 when I actually wrote to O'Reilly. At the time I was going through a stage where I was thinking or writing a book. Foolishly, I had mentioned this to my dad, who then took every opportunity he had to remind me. It's a shame I never got round to it, as it really would make his day.

Domino Hack book coverPart of the reason I never got round to writing anything was that, if I did write a book, I would really want it to be published by O'Reilly. You can see I like them.

Anyway, O'Reilly turned me down. Why? Because they "already have a book on Domino". The fact that it's an administrator's book and I was a developer seemed to pass them by. Instead of pointing this out I took the hint and forgot all about it. Now they have their new Hacks Series of books and the idea is back on my mind.

O'Reilly's Hacks Series reclaims the term "hacking" for the good guys — innovators who explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create useful tools, and come up with fun things to try on their own

What could be a more fitting title for a book on Domino development than Lotus Domino Hacks?! Unearth shortcuts? Damnit, we've spent whole careers unearthing Domino's shortcuts!

Maybe it's time to get back in touch with O'Reilly? How long could it take to compile a list of 100 Domino hacks? Not long. Anybody interested in contributing if I get them to agree? You get credit for anything used of course.

It's not that easy Erwin. You need a hack to join.

OK, Jake, we should talk. I have some experience in this area ;)

I have some other stuff I want to talk to you about as well - Peerwire, etc. Give me a call - 770.967.3803.

    Later!

  2. I think you might find it easier if you have a draft manuscript to offer for review, otherwise they can't tell your style or committment. The good thing in your favour is this site, so make sure you mention it in any discussions so that they can review some of the content. After all, I'm sure youll use your existing content as content for the book (although that might raise interesting issues with a publisher).

But go for it. I'm sure you'll get plenty of takers through this site.

  3. i'd be up for it-- here's a client hack:

I have a few web hack ideas, too, if you're focusing just on web stuff...

  4. I'm up for it - either in contributing if you'll have me or buying the book once it's out. I don't think you'll have a problem hitting the 100 mark, as most of what we do to get the job done requires a hack or three!

Also, Rocky's the man, so I'd follow up with him...

maybe I can tell you a few things about Lotus Workflow or using the SAP java Connector with Notes. Dunno if these are hacks but for someone out there it could be interesting...

  5. I would love to buy this book if it ever gets published! I have a few hacks that you might consider - the big one is a way to mimic "editable views" on the web in R5.

I'd be happy to help, so far I havn't seen any of the web hacks I use on any sites. I'm working on collecting them and making explanations.

I'll post a link when I get them organized.

  7. Hey Jake. Definitely go for it - I think you have at least one book in you. :-)

    Here's my hack:

Best of luck doing the book. I think it will definite become one of those things every domino programmer HAS to have on their bookshelf.

I find a lot of what you need to be a Lotus / Domino programmer these days is in the API, if that counts as a hack then I have plenty.

  8. As much as I've been getting out of sites like yours and Notestips, PLEASE put together this book. Heck I'll but 2 copies, one for home and one for the office. If you can't get O'Reilly to buy the idea, then how about compiling the hacks into a notes database or a pdf format. I believe Declan and Rocky were discussing a tips and tricks database at OpenNTF.org... I'll pay to download it. Dont' tease me with this idea I'm already salivating :-)

  9. Mmm. Count me in - I've got a few... Mostly revolving around breaking 64 limits on classes, data-driven dynamically loaded script libraries, large domino applications, and the like..
