Another change of direction

Do you get the impression I very rarely deliver what I promise? That's how I feel sometimes. Right now it's because I promised lots of PHP talk when I got back from holidays. Not sure that's going to happen though. The reason being that it looks like I've not got the contract to create the website I talked about. A shame because I could have done with the cash but, at the same time, I am also relieved. The client had no idea what they really wanted. I could see the fixed price would have to cater for a huge amount of scope-creep.

Never mind though, as I got myself some other work to be getting on with. I am now in the employ of one Brendon Upson. Most of you will know his name in connection with the Puakma server he wrote. Well, that's what I am now developing with. It's come a long way since he first showed it to me almost two years ago.

The project involves a lot of interesting stuff, like Java and LDAP, so you can expect at least something of interest to come your way soon. Maybe I'll even get round to writing that article to introduce you all to PHP concepts. So much to do, such little time. It's Karen's birthday on Saturday and I have absolutely no idea what to do/buy. She said "Just buy me some girly things." Great help that is.

Flowers, mate, you can't go wrong with a nice bouquette.

  1. Too bad you don't have a Bath & Body Works across the big pond...

    {Link}

That place is great; walk in with money in hand and pull that old "help me... I'm a male"-deal and they even giftwrap!

Good luck and I look forward to reading the PHP article(s).

    -Chris

  2. Jake,

Glad to see you moving in that direction. Talents like yours will flourish within a Java environment. Good luck.

btw. skin care/fragrance are always optins.

How about that nice car she dreams of .....!

  3. I second the flowers. :-)

Gift certificate for a manicure and a Facial?

She'll feel pampered and special. It's always such a treat.

  4. Hmmmm . Java and LDAP .. reminds me of old times .. LOL .wait .. I am not THAT old .. :P

Birthday gift? well, a nice bouquet, coupled with a nice home made aromatherapy bath to make her feel pampered and some premier cosmetic sets to bring out the goddess in her. :D

    Hope that helps dude. :)

  5. I can't display your site,hoho,maybe it's down when I visit......

  6. You know what PUAKMA really stands for right?

  7. What's that thing with women and birthdaygifts. Girly things???? Me male, me not know. Males are very specific in what they want. Is there a woman who can and will explain this to us Neanderthals? ;-)

Anyway, my girlfriend is ALWAYS (!) happy with some oils or those weird smelling bathingballs which she can use in the bathtub. But she also likes going to a beautyfarm and receive "the works". Stuff like mudbaths, nailpolishing etc... So you could plan a special day for her. Starting with a nice breakfast in bed. You definitely need a big bouquette with some special flowers in it. Put no roses in it, since these always seem to die in two days. That could give her the idea that you bought them at a gasstation.

Put her in your car and drive her to the beautyfarm. A nice dinner in the evening, perhaps followed by a movie or musical.

Just some thoughts. Reading this makes me think I must be crazy!! Well, have fun.

    Regards

A musical? In Sunderland? A mobile chip shop and ice cream van with its chimes playing at a bus stop is a fiesta there.

  8. Buy her Puakma - it rocks! Failing that im sure a PC free day will impress her!

    - and I wouldn't diss any prospect you missed out on - you never know when you might meet and need them again!!

Get her some sexy underwear - money well spent as it's like a present for yourself too :)

  9. Pretend you're married. Buy her a lawn mower or a power saw ;-)

Get her a Mathmos Tumbler Phaze. They're just the coolest and women LOVE them. Trust me.

  10. Write. Get on to interflora.com (or .co.uk (not sure)) Get one of their multiple or single rose dealies. These things are generally rocking. Opt for the add-on teddy bear - they always like this.

Next up get some massage oils - women love messages.

Then onto the lingerie shop, women also love nice underwear.. But not Ann summers! - Get quality stuff - it'll make it look like you've hunted high and low. Nothing in red - go for black or white.

Get her some stupid things - like those little tubs of bubbles, ya know where the tops come out and you blow through. Get her lots of things like that silly cheap nonsense.

DVD's always go down a treat - as well as some sort of hot chocolate kit thing from a Thornton’s shop.

If you have time MAKE her a card... with your own two hands! This shows you've put effort in - no matter how poor it ends up looking. Just go to your nearest staples, buy some black card and a silver paint pen, and draw a big silver heart on the front - this will be fine.

And anything else is a bonus for her!

    My work here is done!

I meant. Right - btw that'll be my ideas coming out before I think how to write them!

    Silly boy!

  11. Give her some cash and send her off to shops herself. Shopping is not a man's thing. Then you can write that PHP Article.....

Women love getting "handy-around-the-house" things, like ironing boards, marigolds, or saucepans don't they?

Is writing PHP articles a man's thing?

  12. PHP article, I know my woman would have a clue.

Craig, you've hit the nail on the head, but what about the chain that link the kitchen to the bedroom...

And who was that idiot who invented the door to the kitchen...

For a long and happy life, NEVER give the following (or their like) to the lady in your life:

    Ironing board

    Clothes iron

    Pots and pans

    Lawn mower

    Brooms

    Dust mops

    Scrub brushs of any sort

    Computer hard drives

    RAM

    Marmite

    Electric drills

Women, do, however, much appreciate gifts such as:

    Earings

    Bracelets

    Pendants

    Rings

Just make sure they contain one or more of the following: Gold, silver, semi-, and/or precious stones and are acompanied by a bouquet of flowers.

Is there some history we should know about? You seem to be getting a great deal of advice....

  13. A response to Ed (many items above mine):

I assume the answer is: Pucker Up And Kiss My Ass

That's meant strictly as a response to your question and not intended as either an invitation or a directive!

    - Rob

PS: Jake, I agree with all the flowers and frillies suggestions. The other option might be a REALLY nice night out (limo to dinner, show, etc.).

  14. LOL. Somehow, I think Jake is more confused about what to get now ... He suddenly has so much choices to choose from!

    Just my thoughts ...

  15. Craig, we need to talk. :-P

And Edward, some of us gals love getting hard drives and RAM. Though sometimes we wish we didn't. Sigh.

    :-)

    Jess,

I bet you'd rather be presented with a hard drive than a 3.5" floppy ;)
