Finding New Music On Amazon

Many thanks to Dave Meehan for his gift. In the accompanying note Dave mentions that he found the CD himself via Amazon's recommendation. This is exactly how I found it. Well, not exactly. Why would I trust Amazon? Instead I prefer to start with a CD I know I like and see what CDs people who bought that bought as well. It's a bit hit and miss but, every now and then, you find yourself a new favourite. Such as my current over-played CD. Finding decent new music is a bit like finding decent Freeware.

Anyway, I'm off up to Sunderland today and (hopefully) a fully-functional ADSL connection. Hoorah! Things might finally start to return to normal.

  1. Your welcome Jake. And there was me wondering why I'd got a dispatch notification and nothing had turned up! Totally slipped my mind that I'd ordered that a couple of weeks back. LOL.

Did you realise that the label under which Pause is published is called Domino... uncanny...

I would recommend the Cinematic Orchestra:

    Hi Jake,

For those of afraid to try something new without a sample how about emailing us the first two songs in mp3 format? Will your mac allow you to rip files that way? I couldn't find any of the songs on Kazaa...

Not sure about that Joe. What with me being a fine upstanding member of the law-abiding community!

The thing with buying this way is that you *have* to take a risk!

I've got a collection of duff CD's from years of buying and now I won't buy anything unless I've listened to it properly via downloads first. Most of my downloaded MP3's visit the recycle bin very early on.

A good source of new music is the Late Junction programme on Radio 3 - one can record MP3's if listening digitally so that you can give something interesting a few listens. I'd stear clear of the throat-singers though unless well under the influence at which time they become oddly entertaining.

I wish I could have done the pre-buy trial with Windows XP - £180 worth of rubbish. (When it says it has successfully fixed a registry entry it clearly has a unique meaning for 'fixed')

Bored today? Well, yes I am. How did you know?

    David (and all music-lovers),

if you're bored and got some time on your hands, then check out Les Horribles Cernettes {Link} - the girl-group from CERN who sing doo-wop songs about physics and the internet. Very entertaining songs, those girls have.

  2. For info on Four Tet see {Link}

Keiran's a member of a band called Fridge {Link} which is pretty similar to be honest.

I would recommend virtually anything on Domino Records {Link} and since living in Manchester am also tempted to plug Twisted Nerve Records {Link} - loads of MP3s for you all to sample there!

    Enjoy...

  3. I'm always buying stuff without having heard it first, and in about 5 years of using Amazon for that purpose, I've only ever brought one duff one, and thats because 'Suede' is also the name of a very duff country and western singer!

If you work with the Amazon recommendations, you can get some real treats. One of the tricks is to either buy lots through them, or use their 'I own this' options to tailor the recommendations. Sometimes you can get a bit samey, but I usually by a chart compilation album once every few months to give me new ideas.

I was a good enough customer to Amazon in 2001 that they sent me a drinks mug for Christmas. I worked out I must have spent about UKP 1000 with them during that year! Not sure whether to be pleased or offended though!
