Monster Flu

Sorry. Just been knocked out for a few days by a monster flu. Thought it might have been Malaria for a while but that was probably just me being melodramatic. It is a worry though as I stopped taking the anti-Malaria tablets during the second week of my holiday. Too many sleepless nights and vivid nightmares. Little like being George Clooney in his new film, Solaris, which I went to see at the weekend and quite enjoyed. Even if I wasn't quite sure what happened at the end.

Needless to say I am a little grumpy today. So you can imagine I wasn't overly nice in the email to the lady that posted this comment. As if spamming my inbox wasn't bad enough they are now doing it to my website as well. I've removed their contact details but left it there just so I can whinge about it here ;o)

Good for you Jake - did she reply ?

(You'd think she'd be clever enough to at least enter the "advert" against a recent blog of yours rather than one from months back ?)

Don't think I'll be getting a reply from the mail. Wasn't exactly minding my Ps and Qs.

She's been at it all over the shop:

    You have my sympathies Jake.

    Twice.

Both for your current state and the blatant abuse of your site.

    I know that problem...

The last five entries in my guestbook were two Advertisement for an Online-Casino (I removed the links) with an inconspicuous text and three radically right-wing entries (I removed them!). Now I changed the functionality (I think similar to Ben Poole) that new entries are only published after review...

Seems anti-malaria drugs can be quite the kick in the head. Ed Brill recently posted about a trip he took to Vietnam in 2000. His anti-malaria meds (Lariam) apparently took quite a toll. See:

    {Link}

Taking those meds is obviously necessary, but the side effects shouldn't be. Then again, maybe that's just me...

In any case, hope you're feeling better Jake.

I've tried the approach of approving posts before they appear but it doesn't work well and soon becomes an extra chore that you can do without.

Feel better now Rod thanks. Just rang NHS Direct {Link} and the nurse made me feel a *little* better and (without being able to diagnose for obvious reasons) said she doubts it's Malaria. Probably some other nasty bug I picked up that has been building up in my system. Going to the doctors tomorrow for a blood test.

  1. Hmmmm. I took Larium on a trip to Africa in 2000. Although I didn't have the vivid dreams/nightmares, it did make me a little depressed and definitely anti-social - difficult when you're trapped on the back of a truck with 19 others. I'll be avoiding this on any future trips to maliarial countries!

re: malaria - I was always told that taking anti-malaria drugs never actually stops you getting it, just lessens the symptoms. When I was out in Africa, the long-termers never took the drugs, claiming it was better to just treat the malaria if they got it rather than suffer the side-effects of the drugs.

  3. The thing that makes me laugh is when they say "We're sorry to use this forum..." when they are clearly not sorry. They'd do it again I tell you; again and again and again!

    Ahahahahhahah

I am not joking Jake, but who is this pathetic guy called Rufus? Is he seeking to tick you off, or am I being paranoid.

I thought this was suppose to be a techincal forum, with some light humour. Not a place for sexually debased chauvinists like Rufus.

I find this guy very offensive and immoral, and what he has written could cause this site to be listed as a banned site within most of the companies we work for.

Peter - it's pretty obvious to me that Rufus' post is not something Jake would condone or even allow to stay on the site for very long - I'm sure as soon as he sees it, he will remove it.

Don't blame Jake because some idiot decided to exploit the fact that posts are pre-scanned (as Jake previously mentioned).

I'm sure that most companies (and I hope yours) have the sense to realise that many legitimate sites can be targeted by 'hackers' or the like.

John, I am not blaming Jake at all. I am just vexed against that depraved human being called Rufus. He needs to get his mental health checked out because that is an example of very sick human being.

I hope Jake does not see it as an attack on him, because that was never the intention.

Guys, don't worry about it. I try my best not to.

I must check your site more frequently Jake.

    Alex,

I'm sure you didn't miss out on much.

    Jake,

Good perspective, no need to get fussed up over someone who obviously has nothing better to do with their time. Now, how about some domino code/talk?

  4. Jake, my other half works in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She complains endlessly about the anti-malarial drugs bad publicity and says that what the TV documentaries and news/magazine articles fail to mention is that if you decide not to take it - you CAN DIE! I bet that's made you fell a bit perkier!

However, if I remember to take my Cod Liver oil on a daily basis to ease my arthritic knee maybe I wouldn't be such a damn pain in the arse!

So forgetting to take stuff, especially alcohol induced gets my full sympathy.

Get well soon mate, this internet thing is a much smaller place without you.

I see my comment went too... I *was* joking Jake - There was no way to follow a post like that! ;) I suppose it had no context once the offending article had been (correctly) removed.

This is MAD. Surely a company that supplies Notes solutions would have to be insane to anger the main author of a website that is very influential to people in the Notes "world".

I can't believe anyone would do it, it'll backfire if we all slag her off, surely? I know they say that all pulicity is good publicity, but I will NEVER buy a product from any company that spamms or does anything like this.

I worry that naming and shaming might HELP these offenders, but I would enjoy a hall of shame we could use to boycott companies and recommend our employers not do business with them.

I'm not allowed to actually kill them, am I?

Another point is that some people will argue that the software houses are not to blame for the practises of marketing companies they use.

This is Wuatang. If any company uses a marketing company that uses "bad" marketing, then they are responsible - bothe legally and in my opinion "ethically".

    Jake,

good thing you'll take the blood test. As has been mentioned before, Malaria isn't a funny thing. Please DO take the possibility serious.

My greatgranddad picked it up in China around 1900, and he'd only survived that trip by about a dozen years, dying way before his time and leaving behind his orphaned children.

I often wonder what my grandfather and his sisters might have been spared, if their dad had lived longer.-

BTW, I just read that here in Germany populations of malaria-transmitting moskitoes ("Stechmücken") have been found to be increasing. Plus we just imported some kind of deadly brand new pneumonia. Hooray for globalization!

    Cheers,

    A.
