31 Days Has December
No sooner had I released the DomBlog template than the first bug rolled in. Thanks to Danny Jamieson for pointing out that December does indeed have 31 days and not 30. In passing the book I would like to blame Laurent deWalick for having me trust in his code without actually testing it. Woops ;o)
But it's there anyway. Get using it! To all the people who have complained that my blog is often irrelevant and off-topic I say go do it yourself. See how hard it can be to think of something interesting to say about Domino every single day.
Why have I released it now? Is it to try and better the efforts of other people making Domino-based blogs. No, it's not! The catalyst was the number of emails I receive asking how the blogging element of this site works. Replying with a link to a template is an awful lot easier than describing the internals each time.
Also in today's mailbag is a note from Uncle Phil (no relation) to request a change to the template. As he points out, you can't post more than one blog for any one day and still have the "permalinks"/comments features work. What's that I hear? Could it be an approaching version 1.1.....
Excellent Jake, much appreciated. Just think, you've given a Christmas present to how many people?!
Actually, it *is* hard thinking up Domino stuff every day. I've only been running my Blog for a couple of weeks now, and finding it hard without repeating myself. Still you've done a great job for the past year-plus, so I'm sure you'll cope for the next few years/months/days/millenia (Delete as applicable)
Most of the time I'm hacking around in code, and I'm sure people won't find that very interesting (OK, some of you would) but it doesn't make for good reading.
Dear Jake,
Thank you for publishing your blogtemplate. It is an ideal starting point for blog(develop)ers. Educated by all the articles I have read from you in the past, most code behind it was easy to understand. One question though: In Codestore you have a navigation menu on the right and in the Blogtemplate a menu on the left. What are the reasons for you for choosing a right menu? Are you aware of any design rules for choosing between left and right?
p.s. What I miss in your template is the possibility to search for two words without using "AND". Since you are such a javascript expert, I expected you to have developed the js equivalent of Google Style Search Queries
Thanks Larry. Glad you like it.
Whilst I'm sure the usability crew would have something to say about it all I don't think there's much in the location of the "navigator" really.
Personally I chose the right on this site a) for a change b) to give precedence to content rather than options.
It's up to you. The template is all laid out with CSS so it's easy to change.
FYI, there's a minor typo in the Calendar source--the [th] tags aren't closed properly (each one has a [/ht] closing tag).
Looks great though!
