Is Zippy a "Lotus Notes for the rest of us"?

Whatever happen to the days of paying for software once? It seems like every new piece of enterprise software has either a monthly fee or some required annual maintenance agreement.

It was developed by Ray Ozzie - the same guy who wrote Lotus Notes.
