The price of fame

Call it what you want. I call it Identity Theft and find it hard to see the funny side. I did NOT add these comments to the C|Net site. For a start there's an apostrophe missing from "its" ;o)

ID Theft

Whilst I'm open to the idea that there is more than one person in the world called Jake Howlett with an interest in Domino, I think it's a slim enough chance for me to assume it's some fool pretending to be me. The price of fame I guess...

I've been using Opera as my email client (personal mail that is, not codestore mail which is, of course, Notes mail) for about 3 years now. So I am eagerly awaiting version 7 which is supposed to be a lot nicer. I hope so. Any mail client which includes a message Import option but not one to Export them has a duty to deliver if they are going to trap you like that.

I would guess that this is just a coincidence. Assuming they were trying to impersonate you, what would be their point? It's not like they're pretending to be Jake Howlett and saying "Domino sucks, it's going out of production in a year, and Notes developers are stupid" or any character assassination like that. It just seems like an innocent comment to me. No harm, no foul.

  1. Agreed. I've come across guestbook entries signed off by people called / calling themselves Ben Poole, and they give my URL!

Tone - the thought did cross my mind but the time it was posted rules that out ;o)

Sam - I will stick my neck out here and say I bet you there is not another Domino bod with my name out there. Jake's not a common name. Howlett is even less so. Google returns ONE other result for Jake Howlett and he's a teenaged 100m sprinter (with potential I might add).

If it is somebody pretending to be me then I don't care if they said something profoundly moving it is STILL identity theft and not clever.

Say it is a serious post by my namesake then why say they like it and give it 1 star in all categories? It's a crank post!

that reminds me some time ago when in a msg board I seen the "ip logged" info and I was wondering if it was really usefull , well in this case you should have a chance to complain later maybe. Just sad noone try to impersonnate me ;) must be the ransom of success for sure

I love vanity searches! Looks like you're not only an up-and-coming sprinter, you're also a new Junior Infant at Kildare who likes to collect candy bar wrappers.

OTOH, being Sam Craft makes me:

See, this is why I don't blog...now I've killed my entire morning. =)

Don't ask about the chocolate wrappers. A very long story ;o) and it is me...

I would say definitely no coincidence, and a theft of identity. But I guess you can be happy with the thought that you are so (in)famous in the Domino world that people are now impersonating you online ! Think what they may be doing with your credit card ...

Infamous? Me? What could I have done to deserve infamy... (infamous adj. 1 notoriously bad; having a bad reputation)

  2. At least none of you have a ballad about you that ends with the death of your family...where on earth did Bob Dylan come up with this idea? http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/hollis.html

Gets better: There's now THREE Jake Howletts posting. My fave is "'Quality' - It's arse-kickingly good. As my mother would say".

Hey, totally off topic: Anybody remember "Roxanne, Roxanne, I wanna be your man" and the number of replies that were spawned (e.g. "I'm the real Roxanne")?
