IP Address Representations
Something I am conscious of is this blog becoming very me, me and more me. I make no excuses for this but I do worry that without a certain amount of technical know-how to be had I will lose visitor loyalty. It's now been more than a month since my last article and I really need to get some more pushed out. So, I've bought a book and I plan promise to deliver the next SVG installment within the next seven days.
I just finished another Tube-Book which meant flexing bits of my brain not used in a while. Maths was one of my strongest subjects at university and it's nice to be reminded of some of the things I had forgotten I ever knew. Talking of numbers, did you know that an IP address is just the dotted-decimal base 256 representation of the actual number stored in DNS. So, the host www.notes.net with IP address 205.159.212.30 can be represented as (205 x 2563) + (159 x 2562) + (212 x 256) + 30 which equals 3449803806. Here's a better explanation and here's a bookmarklet style link to let you try your own IPs.
Two Domino sites that have joined me and Mike in our quest to rid the world of tables are David's Marhsy.com and Alex's Dominocode.net. Alex needs some Spanish speaking volunteers to help him test it out...
