Made it home OK, with food for thought:

Amsterdam Centraal Station to Schipol Airport: £1.80.
Quick, clean and on-time.

"London Gatwick" Airport to London Victoria Station: £9.70.
Slow, dirty and late.

So, in Amsterdam, you run the risk of being robbed on the street but in London you are going to get robbed no matter what. I hate this country sometimes....

Wasn't aware that I was held in such regard that my employment status is a sad reflection on the state of the market. Flattered none the less.
