Happy Birthday CodeStore

Yes indeed, it's been a year since CodeStore started in its current format. Whether it feels that long or not I can't decide. Certainly a lot has happened! Here is the first article I decided to publish. Little did I know then that I would write another article a little less than a year later than would render it useless. Such is the nature of the business we work in that sites like this can warrant their existence. Sometimes I think I might run out of ideas for new content. Then a new technology arrives and a myriad of new situations and applications arise. This is one of the things I like about the Lotus Domino platform; we are never restricted to any one language to address any particular problem.

You may notice a distinct difference between the two articles above. As I have written more and more for the site I have tried to get away from the "here's some code, go use it" approach and tried to move toward articles that discuss the method and its drawbacks and implications. Occasionally I reach a point where I have wondered why I bother at all, then along come the visitors who let me know they appreciate all the hard work and that's normally enough to keep me at it (plus it looks pretty good on the résumé!!).

So why am I writing this, you may well be asking yourself. Well it seems a good time to take stock and look forward to the next year. I need your help to make this site what you want it to be. I get a lot of positive feedback but very rarely do comments include "it would be better if..", "have you thought of including...", "why can't you add.." etc. So, come on, let me know what I can do to the site to make it the Domino resource that we've always been missing (in my opinion). Use the usual methods of communication although I prefer that you use the Comments form in this instance so that everyone else can read what you think.

Looking back:

Not sure what I expected CodeStore to turn in to when I started. Ideally I suppose for it to be the place for Domino developers to come where they know there will be fresh, relevant content that they can actually utilise in everyday situations. Hopefully I am some way toward that.

I often wonder how many Domino developers there are in the world and how long before they have all visited. I constantly receive mail from people who have "just found your site". Most people seem to have found there way over following a trip to the Notes.net Café forum or after a friend tells them to. Other main referrers include a link the About Domino page on Notes.net, being Domino Power's "Site of the Month" a while back, SearchDomino.com's write up and Google.com's high ranking of the site.

Looking forward:

I think it is time that you guys took part too. After all, I can't do all the work myself can I!?. CodeStore needs people who know what they are talking about to write articles for it. Let me know if you are feeling up to it. You don't get paid but you can get a few of your fifteen minutes of fame... as have Bob Mattler, Johan Känngård, Patrick Ransom and co.

I used to think I would run out of things to discuss on the site. How silly I was! Publishing at a rate of about one a week I currently have enough "ideas" jotted down to keep me going for rest of the year. This doesn't account for the things that I constantly seem to learn and get told. Nor does it account for me learning Java in depth and planning lots of articles on both things like JSP and Servlets. All of which will put us in a better position for the release of R6 (Call me a cynic but I refuse to call it RNext. Who really cares what it will end up as?). Who knows maybe it will turn in to a WebSphere developer's site this time next year ;) Or maybe "IBM DominoSphere"...

On a final note (if you actually read this far) what do you all think to a new look? Personally I tend to adopt the old adage "If it isn't broken, don't fix it". But then it's always nice to have a change every now and then isn't it.

    Suggestion

You've asked for suggestion to improve the format, but honestly, I can think of very few. This is an extremely well-done website. However, I would consider including a tutorial section to help complete newbies in LotusScript and @formula language. Take it from me, a person who was a complete newbie to programming in general less than a year ago. I can find a ton of good tutorials for HTML, Java, and JavaScript, but none for LotusScript and @formula language. If I have time between projects in the next week or two, I will even help you write these tutorials. Let me know what you think.

Also, I suppose a chat room would be nice to get some real-time help, but if that's too much of a headache, no big deal. Just a thought.

    Sam

  3. Many happy returns

What can I say? Well done! If only all the Notes-related sites were as clearly laid out, well-written and just plain logical.

    Congrats - Chris Thorpe

  4. Thanks!

Thanks again Jake for all your hard work this year. This site is a constant source of technical advice and design inspiration. If I have anything worthwhile to add in the future I will be sure to send it along. Cheers.

  5. Congrats

    Many happy congratulations!!

Jake, keep up the good work and i do hope to see that Codestore gets to be 2 years too...

  6. All the best for the future!

Wishing codestore.net a very happy first anniversary and all the best for the future. The thought behind promoting this site in CLiPings was to introduce my peers to this site and to invite their contributions for the site contents to make this site the best in the Domino community.

  7. THANK YOU ALL!!

The feedback is, as ever, very much appreciated.

Thank you Jaspreet. That is what I like to see. People willing to share...

This birthday party gets better. I just got an email from webmaster@notes.net to ask for a picture of me as I've been nominated for September's "Member Spotlight" on the Notes.net Café. You're all too kind....

    Jake

  8. Grattis på födelsedagen!

CodeStore is, as you say, _THE_ site! Only useful tips!

  9. Congrats

    Jake

congratulations. I find this site to be the best reference on the Web. Over the last year we have made a big move to Extranet/Intranet and I and my developers found your site invaluable for cool bits of JavaScript code.

What I appreciated was the detailed description that is wrapped around the code.

    Keep up the good work.

All the best from "down under"

  10. Congratulations

Thanks Jake for the constant effort. I really appreciate it and I am sure that all Domino developers agree that this is the most valuable resource for us. Victor

    Well done....and a suggestion

    Jake,

Cheers to the success of codestore.net! One thing that might be a nice addition to the site is a 'Featured Domino Site' section. Readers could submit URLs of domino work they've done and highlight where they may have used ideas from codestore.net. It'd also be a good way for us to get feedback from our peers.

    1. Re: Well done....and a suggestion

Hmm, sounds like an idea. I take it you have something you want to "show off" Ben? Come on then where is it?

If anybody else wants to then start sending the links in....

      Jake

    2. Re: Well done....and a suggestion

Congratulations! Everyone I introduce codestore to agrees with me - it is the BEST Domino site on the web bar none....

Suggestion: Personally I don't like having to open each thread of a discussion in (what is effectively) a new window to read the whole - a requirement typical of most sites and negatively affected by local web performance.

One option is to create a discussion that displays the complete threaded subject on the left and the contents of selected doc on the right - allowing easy stepping through of the content while retaining context.

There may be better ideas out there - for example dhtmlcentral.com displays the whole (of each) discussion as a single page.

      and so on..

Looking forward to hearing what your users think, and towards another year of superlative content.

This is for me the very best site on the net, and not just Domino. This is what the web was intended for !! Congratulations on an excellent job, a true community service.

  14. Tis a great site Jake

Congrats on providing me with a year of inspiration for my projects!!

  19. Woo Hoo!

    Merry birthday codestore!

Ta for all great solutions you've provided over the year. I've lost track of the number of times I've managed to weasel out of a tricky situation by jumping on the web and heading to codestore. I look forward to more weaseling over the next 12 months.

    Cheers,

    Colour Scheme

Jake I do not like this pale blue everywhere.

The welcome thing should change colour every time it comes back. Everything else I do not understand. Where has that link to lotus notes gone?

    1. Re: Colour Scheme

Thanks Dad. You can always rely on family. Just when I thought I was doing really well, there you go and bring me back down to earth.

      Thanks anyway, Jake

    Sweet site

The best thing about this site, you explain topics in great detail, in English that I can understand ! Some of the books out there I find pretty tough to follow sometimes. So when I've got a client breathing down my neck for results, I come to your site first.

  22. Congrats!!

Your site is the best non-Lotus site I know of and I turn to it constantly. I think you've done a wonderful job and I will think of an article to contribute soon, I hope. The look is fine and very readable, so I vote for no changes. One question, though: My tiny company is wondering what hardware/server/platform/RAM, HD space, etc. you use to host your site. Can you post the details, because your site has very good response time and I'm curious how you have achieved that.

    1. Re: Congrats!!

Thank you. Suppose I can't not answer this one after such nice words ;)

Well, you can find out most of that just from looking at the source to the page:

      <!-- Lotus-Domino (Release 5.0.8 - June 18, 2001 on Solaris x86) -->

As for hardware specifics I really don't know. Sure it talks about that on the host's website: http://www.prominic.net

Don't forget that design considerations can be equally inportant to a site's performance

    no only joking...

I hope that you continue the good work.

  24. Happy Birthday

Thanks CODESTORE (aka Jake) for saving my a** numerous time. You are a a constant source of information and inspiration. I cannot beleive that this site has been up for only a year. Perfect timing for me since I became a notes developer in October 2000. Thank you and Happy Birthday.

  25. Thank's and Happy Birthday

You give me more ideas and your birthday are same as my birthday. Happy birthday.

  26. Congratulations !

Your site is very nice. I like expecially the human touch you give to it, the clean look and naturally the tips !

    Thanks !

  27. Push the limits..

How about designing a version that accesses teh same content, but pushes the abilities of the latest browser technology to the limits, Flash movies, shockwave apps, XML etc.. Totally reckless abandonment of accessibilty! I would be more than happy to collaborate and help in any way possible.

    1. Re: Push the limits..

Hmmm, devil - deep blue sea, devil - deep blue sea....

You don't know how tempted I am. The only thing that stops me is knowing that I'll start getting mail from the Netscape die-hards telling me what a loser I am. Not that I care too much for what they think.

CodeStore is going to get a redesign soon anyway. The design is a year old and I've learnt a lot in that year. There won't be any flash or XML though and the design will be ultra minimalistic with a very modern feel.

      Jake

  28. Fantastic Content - Keep it up

I only recently discovered codestore, but having made a thorough trawl through all the sections I can honestly say I've never found another source with so many tips for resolving many of the oddities that crop up from using domino for web development. Also some of the coolest additions to domino's standard functionality.

I would seriously consider paying a subscription given the amount of valuable info contained on the site...

Excellent work Jake - keep it up.

    Tim
