Make sure that everything after the "db.nsf/" portion appears legal. Something like "/dir/db.nsf/test?OpenDocument" would cause this error as there is no view specified etc etc

It could also mean that you are trying to trying to access a HTTPS URL but you havnt specified or define the protocol. I got this error in some Java code in one of my agents recently...

We are receiving Error 500
HTTP Web Server: Invalid URL Exception when clicking on a link that should and does after several attempts brings up a "Search" page where users can do full-text searches.

If URL contains list of parameters (&pam=value) then Lotus Notes (at least v.6.5) will return error "HTTP Web Server: Invalid URL Exception" if number of parameters more than 32. (I couldn't find this limit anywhere, this is bitter experience)
